SilverRail partners with HackTrain for HackTrain 3.0 & their RailTech Accelerator

SilverRail is proud to announce its partnership with HackTrain, supporting this year’s Hackathon – HackTrain 3.0 and the HackTrain RailTech Accelerator. The partnership follows on from the success of sponsoring HackTrain 2.0 – an epic event opened by the Transport Minister, Andrew Jones, and attended by more than 120 software developers, designers and entrepreneurs who spent a weekend travelling around the UK on trains, dedicated to solving rail’s biggest challenges through the smart use of technology. During the hackathon weekend we made both the SilverSearch and SilverCore API’s available for the hackers and acted as mentors throughout; sounding out the potential and technical feasibility of participants’ proposals.

Big rail tech issues were tackled head on by developers, including: train disruption, overcrowding and ticketing. You can catch-up on some of the exciting concepts that come out of the weekend here.

We are trying to convince a low tech industry that technology, data and a sound digital infrastructure are things to be embraced – and so any collaboration with start-ups, developers and innovators who think the same way, takes it from being a company mission to a movement.

Our team gets a shot in the arm from events like these. The energy is high, the buzz continues, and networks of like-minded people are built.

We are enormously excited to announce that we will be a partner in this year’s hackathon. The weekend is forecast to be even bigger than last year, with up to 200 participants around the world taking part. The following partners have signed-up already: Department for Transport, Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, Young Rail Professionals and Tech City UK.

Members from our Boston, Brisbane and London offices will join this year’s Hackathon, this time not only to mentor teams but as participants as well. It is a chance for our own software engineers and mathematicians to offer their own innovations and entrepreneurial skills to tackle the big rail tech issues.

On top of HackTrain 3.0 we will also be supporting HackTrain’s RailTech Accelerator programme – the first of its kind, dedicated to working in partnership with the biggest train operating companies (TOCs) in the UK. The 3 month programme, which started in March and ends in June, will provide up to £25,000 in funding, access to mentors and allow start-ups to trial and improve TOCs’ technology within the UK market.

SilverRail will be sponsoring the closing ‘Showcase’ event, taking place on June 1st, where 300+ attendees from the rail and technology industry are expected.

We will of course be documenting our involvement throughout – so watch this space and let the buzz commence!
